Is Boosting Facebook Posts Worth It?

Boosting a post is a quick and easy way to promote your business but is it worth it?
The short answer is it depends on the post and the target audience you're boosting it to.

A key benefit of boosting is more people see your posts, only a small percentage of your page followers see your posts so boosting is a popular way to increase your social media reach. Even just a $10 boost can more than 10x your total number of post impressions.

This can be helpful but only if your post provides a good first impression of your business and is a post that helps get people one step closer to make a purchase. If your post includes a website link or phone number then boosting your post can increase the number of people likely to click the link or call you.
Targeting can be make or break

Targeting is also essential to make any boosting worthwhile, if you're paying to get a post in front of more people you want to make sure you're reaching those most likely to be interested in what you sell.

For any service-based businesses, you want to make sure you're boosting it to your service area and not nationwide (a common mistake people make). Location targeting (or lack of) is one of the biggest causes of small business owners wasting their money on Facebook. Beyond location, age and gender you can also target by 'Interests'. For example you can target people interested in 'Online Shopping' if you sell things online. There are some interests that will be super relevant to some businesses while other businesses might not find anything immediately relevant.

Whether or not boosting a post is worth it also depends on what your goals are. Boosting a post isn't going to increase your sales or drastically increase your follower count overnight but if you want a greater number of people to see your boost and increase your local brand awareness then boosting can achieve this goal.
Check these 3 things before you boost a post:

#1: Is it obvious what your business does/sells? The more specific the better!

#2: Is it obvious where your business is based / what your service area is?

#3: Is it obvious where people can go to learn more or get in contact with you?

If the answer is no to any of these questions then it's probably not worth boosting a post.

Is boosting the same as running Facebook Ads?

Short answer: yes and no...

The offical line from Facebook is "
Boosted posts are ads you create from existing posts" so boost posts are ads but there are other (better!) ways to run ads on Facebook and Instagram.

Running Facebook Ads via Ads Manager allows you to promote content that doesn't already exist as a post on your page (sometimes these are referred to as 'dark' ads or posts). This way you can be more creative, test different versions of your ads and edit your ads throughout a campaign. Facebook Ads also allows you to add clickable buttons and editable Headlines to your ads.

Boosting is often geared towards on-Facebook reach and engagement, whereas Facebook Ads (as described above) are usually a better choice if you want to send people from Facebook to your website.

You can also promote existing page posts through Facebook Ads Manager which has the similar effect of boosting but allows you to promote multiple posts using a single shared budget.
