I’m often sending tips through to friends and others in my network responsible for Facebook Pages, I thought I might as well bring all these tips together into one blog article, see tips below. Many business owners want to jump into advertising or boosting their posts as soon as possible which is fair. However there are many basic steps they overlook which can set them up for long term success, see my five pointers below.... #1 Setting a Custom Page Username I’ve noticed lately many pages still haven’t claimed a username for their Facebook page. Similar to an Instagram handle, this is something unique to your page and makes it easier for yourself and others to search and/or tag your business page. Adding a username means your Facebook page URL looks like facebook.com/businessname rather than facebook.com/profile.php?id=100092364885 For example mine is https://www.facebook.com/jasonbenbownz and people can find and tag my page using @jasonbenbownz across Facebook. Ideally you want your Facebook page username to match your Facebook page name, your web domain, your Instagram handle or whatever else people may be using to search for your business online. This looks a lot more professional and should help people find your Facebook page via Google if people are searching for your business name. Things that are great for Google are also great for AI search results! #2 Location in Bio This tip is most applicable to service-based businesses. People need to know where you are! I've seen many businesses promote themselves as a 'local business' but you have to visit their website to find out where they are. Make your location obvious on your page, including in your page bio. Especially so if you're running ads - if you ever see "Where are you based" in your comments or in your inbox, you've likely forgotten to do this. #3: Page Visibility If your page has been getting a lot of spam messages lately a common method to help prevent these is to limit your page visibility to show only for people in New Zealand + any other countries directly relevant to your business, customers or suppliers etc. #4: Custom Messenger Autoreply
If people are regularly messaging your page, it helps to customise your Messenger Autoreply so that you have a better, more personable first impressions. Note: I've recently tried to do this myself but have had any luck, possibly a Facebook bug. #5: Review Featured Content Featured content is posts you can pin so they appear at the top of your Facebook page and are usually the first thing people see when visiting your page. People often use this feature and then forget about it which means the first thing people might see is an old post from 2023 that is no longer relevant. Bonus Tip: Secure your account Make sure you use a secure password for your Facebook page that you don’t use elsewhere, it's also helpful to set up two-factor authentication (2FA), this can be annoying but is the recommended action to reduce unauthorised logins. The same goes for Instagram. Managing page access and admins can be headache, if you're working with an agency or have taken over the page from someone else it always pays to check whether you, as a business owner, have full control and actually own the page. — Need help with any of the above?
